The Mac finds and groups faces entirely on your machine; review, rename, and merge groups whenever you like. The People feature guide covers it end to end.

The People tab groups photos by face. Mac-synced libraries get their faces from the Mac; device-made libraries are analysed on the device if you turn analysis on.
Tap a group for every photo of that person. Give them a name, and search finds them by it — people: maya.
